Kevin Keller’s wedding, Occupy Riverdale, digital comics leader – these days it seems there’s nothing Archie isn’t capable of. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale is a lot of things to different people. For CEO Jon Goldwater it is “a diverse, welcoming and current Riverdale.” THE HUFFINGTON POST talked with Goldwater on the present state of Archie Comics, which they describe as, “the most supportive and all-inclusive universe in comicdom.” Not surprisingly, as the wedding of Kevin Keller in Life with Archie #16 proved that despite any criticism, the sold out issue has had overwhelming support from Archie’s core fan base and beyond.
Ever since Goldwater took the reins of the company three years ago, there has been a concerted effort for Riverdale to reflect the world we live in. That included introducing openly gay teen Kevin Keller and, most recently, acknowledging the Occupy movement that’s been sweeping the nation. These things are what make Archie Comics more relevant than ever in today’s world and will continue to do so in the years to come. Archie may be rooted in nostalgia, but his future depends on keeping up with issues that affect all of us. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s lost his sense of humor. In regards to the Occupy Riverdale story, Goldwater states, “It's still very much an Archie story, mind you. Jughead jokes about food and Reggie pokes fun at Archie, etc.”
To sum it up, Goldwater puts it succinctly into words – “Our mantra, day in and day out, is ‘Archie is everywhere.’”
