DID YOU KNOW?
January

Welcome to this month's installment of "Did You Know?" Each month, we'll highlight an Archie Comics character that you may never have heard of before or some other piece of Archie Comics trivia.

This time we're going to fast-forward you to the NEXT century! That's right, we can only be talking about... ARCHIE 3000!

This series arrived on the scene in May, 1989-- when the year 3000 seemed even farther away (because it WAS, come to think of it!). Simply put, ARCHIE 3000 took the typical high school hijinx of everyone's favorite comic book teens-- that whimsical world of love triangles, final exams, homecoming dances and high school proms, being late for class, mistaken identity and slapstick antics-- and transplanted it head-on into the future. What a collision! If you thought Archie was clumsy in the 20th century, you should see the havoc he wreaks with all the futuristic "inventions of convenience!" It's a world where Archie is STILL after Betty and Veronica, but the difference is he has modern technology-- from holograms to hover crafts-- at his disposal!

Meanwhile, Betty and Veronica are still as fashion-conscious as ever, with the wildest hair-dos, makeup and outfits ever! Unlike the other "new-fangled" Archie titles that premiered around the same time-- namely ARCHIE'S EXPLORERS OF THE UNKNOWN and JUGHEAD'S TIME POLICE, the stories in ARCHIE 3000 were all short, self-contained stories, as opposed to being issue-length stories. A variety of creative talent contributed to the series, most notably Dan Parent, Bill Golliher, Rex Lindsey, Jon D'Agostino and Hal Smith. The series had a decent run which ended at issue #16 in July, 1991. You may turn up some back issues at a convention or your local comic shop-- they're basically inexpensively priced, and worth reading for a look at the Archie gang that is simultaneously "nuevo" and "retro"-- as only an Archie comic can be!
