DID YOU KNOW?
March

Welcome to this month's installment of "Did You Know?" Each month, we'll highlight an Archie Comics character that you may never have heard of before or some other piece of Archie Comics trivia.

This time, we're proud to present... ARCHIE'S LOVE SHOWDOWN SPECIAL!

When Archie Comics announced that Archie Andrews may finally choose between Betty & Veronica once and for all, the response from the media, fans and retailers was unprecedented! In the landmark "Love Showdown" storyline, Archie received a mysterious love letter. When Betty and Veronica caught wind of the mash note, each believed the other one sent it, and all-out war was declared to determine who would win Archie's heart once and for all. With the release of VERONICA #39, the fourth part of this landmark series, Archie's choice has finally been revealed! In a surprising move, Archie chose neither Betty nor Veronica, but the mysterious letter author instead: CHERYL BLOSSOM-- a vivacious vixen from Archie's past! Archie fans may recall Cheryl from her appearances in the mid 1980s, as she traveled from the "elite" private school, Pembrook Academy to Riverdale High-- leaving boys with broken hearts and their jealous jilted girlfriends in her wake! Cheryl was the ultimate challenge for Betty, Veronica and all the girls of Riverdale-- an aggressively forward flirt. In short, a "man-killer!"

This monumental story was followed by one of Archie's most successful one-shot specials ever, ARCHIE'S LOVE SHOWDOWN SPECIAL #1, a 48-page "aftermath" follow-up. Fans were treated not only to the continuing saga, as Betty and Veronica marshaled their forces to get their man back, but also learned a little bit about her past through her early stories, which were reprinted here as "flashbacks." Filled with 48-pages of full color fun, this special can still be found in some back issue bins, and is periodically available through mail order. If you missed all the excitement the first time around, it's never too late to catch up on all the romantic mayhem-- because after all, all is fair in love and war!
