ASK
THE ARCHIVIST
May
Hey,
all you Archie-information seekers out there -- you've come
to the right place! It's another installment of "Ask the
Archivist" with Archie Comics' resident archivist, Paul
Castiglia.
Many fans write to me daily asking me when the first appearances
of specific characters were. This month, in answer to many fan's
requests, we answer the question:
"When
was Betty Cooper's first appearance?"
Betty
Cooper actually has the distinction of being one of a handful
of characters to make their first appearances in the very first
Archie story from PEP COMICS #22 (December, 1941). She shares
this honor with Jughead, her parents, Archie's parents and of
course, Archie himself.
As the
story opens, Betty is just moving into Riverdale, and Archie
doesn't miss a beat trying to impress her. Unfortunately, he
also makes an impression on her father-- a negative impression,
that is! Walking a fence blindfolded, he falls off-- right into
Mr. Cooper's prized portrait! That's not all-- he winds up accidentally
destroying one of his priceless vases, too. But Betty has an
idea-- her father's lodge is throwing a carnival. Betty reasons
that Archie can get back on her father's good side if he helps
out at the carnival. Like we said, she just moved into town--
she doesn't know Archie very well. Otherwise, she'd know having
Archie "help out" is an invitation to disaster!!!
That's exactly what happens, when Archie volunteers to walk
the tightrope! A fly decides to bug him, and as he swats at
it, you guessed it-- he falls! To top it all off, he lands in
a bucket of taffy, and accidentally resets the taffy machine
to "high speed," sending taffy spilling out in all
directions! Needless to say, it's yet another sticky situation
for Archie! But through it all, Betty demonstrates the qualities
that have endeared her to fans for nearly sixty years-- despite
his shortcomings, Betty remains loyal and true to Archie!
