ASK
THE ARCHIVIST
September
Hey,
all you Archie-information seekers out there -- you've come
to the right place! It's another installment of "Ask the
Archivist" with Archie Comics' resident archivist, Paul
Castiglia.
Today's
question comes from celpgmd who asks:
"When
was Pop Tate's first appearance and which comic book did he
first appear in?"
Great
question-- because Pop Tate as we now know him looked entirely
different in his first appearance! Pop was one of those characters
who evolved over the years until settling into his current incarnation.
For the record, his first appearance was in PEP COMICS #46 (February,
1944). You can see some panels from this historic comic reprinted
in the book, ARCHIE AMERICANA SERIES: BEST OF THE FORTIES. In
this first Pop Tate story, Pop is tall and thin with a full
head of gray hair and a big, bushy gray mustache!!! In ARCHIE
COMICS #12 (January-February, 1945), Pop has gained some weight,
but still has the gray hair. It is a significant story in that
"Pop Tate Soda Ice Cream" appears on the store window.
These panels also appear in ARCHIE AMERICANA: BEST OF THE FORTIES.
