Here's what parents and others are saying:
First off I am not a parent but I take my little cousins everywhere - including the movies. I recently saw Josie and the Pussycats with my friends on a "girls weekend out" and I thought when I was leaving, "I wish I brought them to see this." Josie and the Pussycats are a classic - so what some cuss words. Their parents use stronger words in front of them. In regards to the "big kiss scene"-- they see worse when we are buying their tickets to a movie from the teenagers in front of the theaters. So personaly I think the People in Hollywood should actually watch the movie and pay attention this time. I am taking my little cousins to see Josie anyway and they are only 8 and 11. So that is my opinion and I hope it helps. Love ya's Beth G. (age 21)
Lots of love, P.S. Alan M., you're soo hot!!
**************************************
I took my 4 year old to see the Josie movie and was surprised when I found out it was a PG-13 since no one died, the risque humor was harmless, and the subliminal message stuff and product endorsement jabs were right on target. Go figure.
This is the best movie ever!! I'm 13 years old and me and all my friends saw it and we all thought it was awsome!! ME and my other 2 friends started a band called "Jamie and the Kitty Cats"!! JOSIE AND VAL AND MEL WERE SSSSSSSSOOOOOOO FUNNY. THEY MAKE A GREAT GROUP!! This is like the best movie ever!! I really liked Mel and Josie. Val was funny too. The consept of DuJour was funny. I love the music it was soo cool. What's up with PG-13 though?? I think they should come put with josie and the pussycats 2!! that would be sooo phat!! Lindsay L.
Hey guys! I've seen the movie, Josie and the Pussycats,
and it has so helped Carrissa
I'm not a parent but I'm 13 and I say that the movie was great. My mom took my 11 yr old brother and cousin and my 4 yr old cousin and they all loved it! That movie shouldn't have been rated PG-13. There are movies that are a little worse than Josie and the Pussycats that I've seen and they were rated PG. So anyway, I really loved the movie and was wondering if there's going to be a sequel. Bye,
Mr. S, Tami
Hi, I'm Kristin and I'm 12 years old. First off, I think that the PG-13 rated is an outrage. It wasn't bad at all. I really liked the movie and I love the CD soundtrack. In fact, I'm listening to "Money" right now. Anyway, I thought the movie was great and a little kiss isn't that much of a big deal. The movie was great and I hope there's a sequel! I'll see it for sure! Luv alwayz, Kristin P.S. My favorite Pussycat is Josie.
I'm 16 and I went to see the movie for one of my best
friend's birthdays. We all really liked the movie and thought it was
really well done. I'm
Hello, I just got home from seeing the Josie and the Pussycats movie with my 10 year old daughter. I think the PG13 rating is appropriate. There were a couple of scenes where there was too much swearing for my taste. If that would have been kept out of the movie, it would have easily been a PG movie in my opinion. Other than the swearing, my daughter and I thought it was great! Thanks for letting me voice my opinion! Denise M. Denise: We wish there wasn't ANY swearing -- but we couldn't get the Studio to cut it all out. As an aside, not only has Canada rated the movie PG, but now so has Australia -- and both of these countries are notoriously much more conservative on moral issues than is the US.) Michael
Hola- Luv always!
Dear Mr. Silberkeit, I, too, was surprised that Josie got a PG-13. It's insane for the studio to WISH to get a PG-13, as kids can't see it without parents. (I would have enjoyed this movie, with a friend, when I was 11 or 12.) My husband and I took our 4-year-old to see Josie and the Pussycats (I have been a fan of Archie comics since I could read, and loved the cartoon as a kid. My daughter likes the pictures in the comics, and was very interested in the TV ads for the movie.) I thought the "pussy" joke was inappropriate for the material, but if any kids get the joke, they've obviously heard it before. The costumes were less scanty than fashionable summerwear for young teens, the kiss was sweet, and, all-in-all, the PG-13 was undeserved. Movie ratings are ridiculous, always have been. They are arbitrarily decided, often (I think) by people who don't mind violence as much as sex (even when "sex" is defined as a sweet kiss.) --Beth
My name is Josie and I have been waiting eargerly
for this movie to come out. I am 19 and I went to see the show with
my boyfriend, who is a year older. We both enjoyed the movie and I
must say that the PG-13 rating is completely ridiculous. There are
worse shows out there that could do with a higher rating...the show
combines the "valley girl" persona with the Charlie's Angels
independence. Anyone should be allowed to see it...Overall, the movie
was AWESOME!
I don't think " Josie and the Pussycats " should have been rated pg-13. I saw it with my 2 daughters ( 9-11) and after the movie, the only thing they disliked was the language. Other than that , they loved it . Signed, A Loving Parent ************************************** Mr. Silberkleit, I just wanted to let you know that I am a music major and a huge follower of the music industry and I LOVED THE WAY THIS SATIRED THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY TO A TEE!!! I like the new genre of music that The Pussycats ended up performing. It is a good transition from the 70s to the 00s. The DuJour group was funny and Tara Reid as perfectly cast as Melody. Throughout all the satire, "dumb blonde humor," and great music, some great moral messages came through at the end: Don't worry about what others think of you. Be yourself.....and Friends first. I liked the TV show, but I thought this was an excellent
film. This was a good film to share with the entire family. It should
be released to buy (instead of just being able to rent it) no doubt.
I know it has not done well at the theaters, but NO DOUBT IT WILL
BE A BLOCKBUSTER ON VIDEO. I loved it -- it was really cute and I
am going to see it many more times. I also bought the soundtrack,
which ROCKS!!!!!!!! Jordan S. ************************************** Hello, My name is Patrick, I am only 12 years old, I went alone to see Josie and The Pussycats. The Rating is outrageous! It should not be PG-13, it should be considered as PG! The critics are very strict, they call simple kissing sexual content, and strong language, there was not much offensive language, I only heard it as a very minor thing! There is no absolute proof the critics have of sexual content, if there is so, they should prove it! ~Patrick ************************************** Hi. My name is Caitlyn. I live in New Jersey. I saw Josie and the Pussycats the other day. I think it is the best movie I've seen since last summer. I think the rating PG-13 was not needed. I'm 11 years old and some people think that I have no clue what the word "pussy" means. Well these people are wrong! I was laughing. I just wanted to say it deserved way more then HALF A STAR! Thanks 4 reading! Bye! From a BIG fan,
**************************************
I agree with you. I took my 7 year old daughter and we both loved it. (and I am very choosey with what I let her see!) I thought it was milder than the PG rated Spy Kids, and a better plot to boot! ************************************** My friends and I really enjoyed the movie. Four of them are boys, three are highschool seniors, and one is working on his second degree in college. It was great that such diverse people could all enjoy different elements of the same movie. Thanks! Elisabeth M. ************************************** Hello, my name is Marky S. Although I am not a mother myself, being only 16, I would like to share my feelings on your rating. I saw the movie and loved it. It was very clean. I don't care for movies that swear excessively, or that are violent. I don't feel that is necessary at all. I thought Josie and the Pussy Cats was a very family appropriate film. It was very cute, and innocent. At no point in the film would I have thought that it was rated PG-13. The clothes are the same as the ones stars wear to Nickelodeon functions, and those are very PG. And, that is the only reason I might think that the movie might be at all racy. I thank you for hearing my opinion, and thank you for a great movie! **************************************
************************************** Hello I saw your movie Josie and the pussy cats twice. One time on Wednesday and the next day Thursday! I loved the movie soooooooooooooooo much! I told all my friends to go and see it. In the movie the music was great! My favorite song was" three small words "I know the whole song! are they going to come out with a sound track cause if they are I am going to buy it if it the last thing I do oh yeah by the way my name is Kacie. I am 13 years old. *~Kacie~*
**************************************
After watching the Josie & the Pussycats movie with my nine year old son tonight, I must say I was surprised on a few counts. First, let me say that this movie was amazingly well done. Far more effort was put into the production of J&TP than could possibly have been necessary. Movies of this nature are generally considered a throwaway/$.99 rental to be watched by the children of the "remote parenting" types, so why bother to make them well? Kids will watch anything, and parents will bring kids to any movie as long as they don't have to think too long about whether or not the movie will be appropriate. With the scarcity of family fare out there, how could an Archie movie miss? Of outstanding quality were the editing (seamless; nothing seemed to drag, yet nothing felt too frantic) and the casting (if Rachel Leigh Cook doesn't look like a cat, I'll eat our cat's food for a week). And then there is the message of the movie, a sentiment that I could not appreciate more as my child is at that age where he is beginning to feel the need to fit in with his peers no matter what the cost. Believe me, catchphrases like "Pink is the new red!" will probably be worn out around our house over the next few weeks. Overall, I found J&TP to be a great film that could be superb all ages fare if not for two minor things. Mike, I don't know if we get a different cut up here in Canada, but I definitely heard two uses of foul language. One was the word "sh*t" (I believe it occured during the scene where Val & Melody were being strapped into the car that would be exploded), and the other I'm trying to remember, but I believe it occured during the scene where the government agents came in at the end and took away the bad guys. Both times I was more concerned about my son's reaction than I was about where they exactly took place, so I'm afraid I can't help pinpoint it further. Perhaps a more retentive parent can fill you in. These two occurences disappointed me greatly. The only other time I have felt this way about a movie was watching The Phantom of five or so years ago, another great movie that could have been perfect if not for two uses of foul language, coincedentally. I know my son has heard the words before, but I could not in good conscience buy the video for him to watch again as I feel I would be condoning the use of the words. I fail to understand why this was necessary. Why can't this language be cleaned up? It in no way added to the film, and milder language could easily have been used instead. Finally, I found there to be no inappropriate dress, nor did I find any of this "mild sensuality" purported to be in the film. Instead I found any possible violations of this code to be sweet and touching, and as we were watching a love story as well, these scenes were more than appropriate. I dread the day when two people expressing their healthy love for each other could possibly be construed as inappropriate for children. I think that in this day and age children need to see two people in a loving relationship, and never do I hesitate to express my love for my son's mother in front of him. Think about it: would you raher have your child see you hit your wife, or kiss her? (And would you ever want your child to see you swear at her?) Hopefully this has provided food for thought. I thank you for your time. Sincerely, ************************************** There seems to be some question on your site regarding whether or not the PG-13 rating was appropriate in the face of an apparently-desired PG rating. I have to admit, I haven't read Archie comics in years; I think the last time I was doing so was back in middle school, reading Betty & Veronica (and I'm currently 28 years old). However, I think I can probably see the MPAA's point in putting PG-13 on the movie. It DOES contain the elements you've bravely and honestly mentioned on your site, but as well, there IS the double-entendre use of the word "pussy", and while that might not necessarily fall within the purview of a younger child's understanding (and then again, it might; I'm often amazed at what younger children know these days!), the fact remains that it IS a sexual double-entendre, one meant to appeal to the teenage audience the movie attempts to target as its primary demographic. Additionally, and please pardon my frankness here, the words "sh*t" and "b*tch" were used in the movie, something that might not necessarily be appropriate, in my parents' eyes, for younger children, whether or not the children are statistically more likely to hear such language at a younger age whilst at school, etc. Ultimately, I can see why the MPAA gave the movie the rating it did, and I'm hoping that said rating isn't keeping the movie from the acclaim it rightfully deserves for its clever send-up of consumerism. Perhaps it's time once again for the MPAA to instigate a new rating, as they did when they started the PG-13 rating as a step between PG and R, just like the more recent inclusion of NC-17 as the next step above R before going into realms that the MPAA traditionally doesn't venture into (is "X" an actual rating from the MPAA?), and perhaps the Josie movie might more accurately fall into this realm that could conceivably exist once again, at this point, between PG and PG-13. It seems, from one school of thought, a bit extreme to give the movie the rating just beneath R, but I think any consideration of that is a pure numbers game: There are only so many ratings. At any rate, I've taken up enough of your time. Thanks for reading
this Kevin ************************************** Hey, just thought I might point this out, you wonder
about the PG-13 rating, I couldn't quite figure it out. There wasn't
any cleavage, but the word b*tch was referenced a couple times, but
The Truman Show had that and it was rated PG, someone really should
re-rate this movie, I believe the movie lost some money due to this. ************************************** I went to see this movie with my 11 year old cousin Daniel, and I've got to say this move is the bomb! I recommend it for anyone at any age. This movie teaches you to be yourself. Thanks you for making such a great movie , David B. P.S. Josie and the Pussycats is the best movie ever!!!!!! ************************************** I just took my almost 9 year old daughter to Josie
and the Pussycats tonight and we both loved it. I agonized before
taking her because of several reviews suggesting there was too much
attention paid to girls' appearances and the skimpy costumes. While
I would prefer my daughter to be exposed to a wider definition of
attractiveness than is depicted in the film, there is nothing here
that I found harmful to her. She asked me a few questions during the
movie because she didn't get a few jokes, and on the way home she
wanted to know what Alexandra meant by "slipping together"
(she misheard "sleeping together") and I answered all her
questions. There is less nudity, sexuality, sensuality than in the
average music video and the violence was cartoonish. I think children
should be accompanied by a parent but I have no regrets that my daughter
saw it. She said it was the best movie she ever saw! We both can't
wait to get the soundtrack and I can foresee buying the video for
her when it comes out. I hope this is helpful to you. I am actually
a psychotherapist by profession and take the subject of appropriate
material for children very seriously. ************************************** I was a little nervous about taking my kids to see a pg13 since they are 8 & 9. They ABSOLUTELY LOVED this movie and I thought it was much better than Spy Kids! It taught the value of friendship and I loved this movie and highly recommend it to everyone! Paula W. **************************************
Hi. I just saw Josie and the Pussycats today and I
didn't like it. I LOVED
it! I mean the cartoon was good, but the movie was great! I went with
my
friend and she said the write up it got was not right. We give the
movie 5
stars!
**************************************
First of all, I loved the movie! JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS IS THE BEST MUSIC MOVIE EVER! But seriously; I am planning on buying the video or DVD when it comes out. I have a special collection of movies about - fictitious - music and musicians that have been done very well and with a degree of authenticity that only another musician would spot. They just ring true, in other words. They're also all great films and I think I would include JATPC among them. (The others are: The Blues Brothers, This Is Spinal Tap, That Thing You Do, The Commitments, Whale Music & Eddie and the Cruisers.) I am a musician and songwriter and I went to see it with a long-time friend and fellow musician/songwriter and we just howled! Of course, Paul was a little more hip to the cameos in the movie than I was. Excellent casting all around! All the music was great! Cudos! I've been humming them ever since. I MUST BUY THE SOUNDTRACK!!! JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS IS THE BEST SOUNDTRACK ALBUM EVER!!! Hmm... where did that come from? The Dujour group was an excellent parody and the songs were dead on. I've been chuckling to myself for hours now on and off, remembering bits of the film. I'm going to see it with my wife tonight (we both grew up with the Saturday morning cartoon version). As for the PG-13 issue, it's hard to say (and not having seen the other movies on the list the article on your website mentions, I can't comment on whether those are better or worse). I didn't think the language was inappropriate. The violence was very tame and quite comic (I loved Melody's martial arts scene!). The "sensual costumes" DID get noticed by my friend and I, but please! That's hardly a reason to up the rating; I've seen movies with some casual nudity that got a lighter rating than this movie did! Sheesh! The "pussy" jokes were very few and far between (eg. Melody's "Honk if you love pussy....cats!" sign scene) and again, compared to other movies I've seen, it was tame. There was also the Back Door Lover song by Dejour, which might offend more conservative elements, but again, compared to what I've heard on the radio just today, it's not offensive in the least. (Just very very funny!) Now, I must qualify my remarks by informing you that I am not a parent, so my opinion isn't really one of the Parental Guidance variety. I speak merely as a member of the movie-going public. I should also mention that it's listed as PG, not PG-13 here in Ontario, Canada, and this province is among the more conservative in its ratings system. So, if it got by us, I can't see why it didn't get by you... Garner R. H. TAO J. ************************************** Hello, We checked to see why it was rated PG 13 beforehand, to be sure not to expose her to something she might be affected by. We didn't think that minor sensuality and some language would affect her, so we took her yesterday. The worst and only part I wish she hadn't seen was the previews....(The Mummy, Evolution) Josie and the Pussycats was a Great movie, Mias new favorite (and
ours). We plan on buying it on DVD as soon as it is available. Sincerely, Allison S. ************************************** I all ways watch the cartoon and I liked it.Then they made the movie and I think it's even cooler. The web page is also fun to and I love the contests, games, and listening to the music. P.S. MY FAVO PUSSY CAT MEL ************************************** After seeing the movie, I believe that the movie was well rated, pg 13 is a good rating for the movie. However, I think young children should be allowed to watch this movie seeing that they would not understand the pg 13 jokes. Also, the movie has a good moral, and teaches about friendship too. **************************************
I took four children ages, 12, 11, 7 and 5 to see Josie
and the Pussycats. We are very glad that we did not skip this pg-13
movie. The kids and I had Again, we are very particular about what our children
watch and hope that ************************************** Hi Folks, I took my eleven year old daughter to see this movie today. It was soooo great. I went with low expectations and was immensely surprised. We both absolutely loved it and I plan to see it again, next time with both my 8 and 11 year old daughters and my girlfriend. The writing and screenplay were stupendous. Dujour? I couldn't stop laughing during the first ten minutes of the film. That was so great. What a fantastic take on today's boy bands and product placement. I loved the monkey in the Target plane. And the concert at the airport! Classic!! My other favorite part was when Tara Reid was singing "If you're happy and you know it, clap you hands" and she kept dropping the McDonald's french fry sponge in the shower when she'd clap! We went to the mall afterwards and bought the soundtrack. Anyway, it was a great film, appropriate for anyone who allows their kids to watch television today. Thanks for a great movie. Regards, ************************************** We just returned from seeing your film with our two daughters, aged 5 and 7. They thoroughly enjoyed it, and the few mildly suggestive scenes went right by them (but sure made Dad laugh). We are very concerned with what our children watch, and would rate this film as "safer" than many TV shows that are on during the early hours, which they are not allowed to watch. ************************************** I love the movie! Also I agree that it should have been only PG, and not PG-13. It was quite possibly the cleanest PG-13 movie I have ever seen. ************************************** Hi, Mike -- I'm not actually a parent, but I am an adult who was a big Josie fan as a kid. I loved the movie, but the only criticism I have about it (besides the fact that the "Josie and the Pussycaaaaats" theme only appears at the end and does NOT have a cat's snicker!) is that there were two completely gratuitous uses of the word "sh*t" that I think I heard. Now, I am not a puritan. I swear myself, and say "sh*t" often. But I am not a movie that I feel parents should be able to take their kids to, and so I have a double-standard. I just felt that Josie did not need to use that particular word and it detracted from the movie. The "honk if you like Josie and the Pussycats" sight gag was funny and over quickly, and you can catch worse things on Britcoms on PBS, so I wasn't that offended. --Kynn ************************************** Alex wrote in to say, "Hello, My name is Alex and I am 13 years of age. I recently went to go see Josie and the Pussycats and I loved it!!!!! Melody, Val, and Josie are the most beautiful women on earth. ( I have kind of a crush on Rachel Lee Cook). But anyways I'm writing to say what I thought of the appropriateness. First of all the movie is in NO, WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM offensive and or inappropriate. The most "colorful" scene is a kissing part, however there is NO SEXUAL CONTENT, so you can put your mind at ease if you think that makes a movie inappropriate. And as for language the strongest word recited "pussy" is exchanged once. How is this offensive? It's the name of the band and the title of the movie! The movie plot is great and I clearly believe ANYONE OF ANY AGE who is capable of watching and understanding a movie can see Josie and the Pussycats. Believe me you will really enjoy this great film." ****************************************************************************** Patsy J. writes, "I took my 11-year old daughter and her friend to a pre-screening of the movie on April 5th. It was the best!! It brought back a lot of memories! ****************************************** Dear Mr. Silberkleit, I just took my 10-year-old daughter to see Josie and the Pussycats. I did not find anything inappropriate in the movie for her age except the one "pussy" joke, which she did not even notice. I enjoyed the political-economic satire including the overdose of product placement and she enjoyed the more obvious plotline and jokes. By the way, we saw Josie on the same afternoon that we saw Spy Kids for the second time, and my daughter particularly enjoyed recognizing Alan Cumming in Josie after just seeing him in the other film. Best regards, ************************************** Dear Mr. Silberkleit: I just visited your site from a link on the "Josie and the Pussycats" movie site. As a 24-year-old guy, I have to admit the thought of "mild sensuality" in a movie starring Tara Reid, Rachel Leigh Cook and Rosario Dawson certainly isn't personally objectionable. But, I found your personal letter to parents--and the humorous format it was displayed in--to be very reassuring. You see, Sir, I remember reading Archie Comics when I was younger. I followed the adventures of Archie Andrews and Jughead Jones, and the innocent "mild sensuality" of Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. I thought they were good comics then, and I still look at them longingly in the checkout lines at the grocery store, knowing I'm too old to be seen buying them and too young to claim to be buying them for my non-existent children. However, the matter-of-fact way you addressed the issue in your letter on the Archie Comics web site was somehow reassuring. It's good to see that Archie Comics is still the institution I remember from my own childhood, and one I will happily pass on to my own children when they come into being. Mr. Silberkleit, I hope the PG-13 rating doesn't result in any negative publicity or black eyes for Archie Comics, nor hurt the performance of this film. I'm thinking pretty seriously of going to see it myself, just because it looks like a fun movie. So, good luck, and I hope the movie is not only successful, but gives your company a boost as well.
**************************************
As a concerned parent of three children, ages 13,
11, 9, (the
younger 2 are girls), I was very apprehensive about taking my daughters
to see a PG-13 film. however, I grew up reading Archie comics and
remember watching Josie and the pussycats on saturday mornings, I
really
wanted to take my daughters to see this film, after reading what you
had
to say about it on your web page, I"m glad to see that my fears
seem
unfounded.
Thank you for taking the time to explain about the PG-13
rating. I am very careful about what I let my children watch on TV
or at
the movies, even going so far as pre-screening movies we rent before
I
let my kids watch them, just to make sure of questionable content,
or
the lack thereof.
Once again, thank you on behalf of all concerned Parents Steve G. ************************************** I'm not a parent, but I am a responsible college student. My boyfriend and I went to see Josie and the Pussycats on opening day and we both loved the movie. I actually didn't find anything wrong with it. We both laughed through the whole thing and I really don't even remember any "mild sexuality" or vulgar language. I even saw a child that was obviously under thirteen with her parents at the movie, and could hear her laughing at the jokes. The way the movie was put together and didn't have the sort of things that Hollywood seems to think they need to put in to make teenagers want to see made the movie funny and cute. I liked that they didn't have that sort of stuff, actually, because making it PG-13 ensures that highschoolers get to see it, and frankly, when I was a teen, I hated that I didn't get to see a lot of the movies I wanted to because they would get R ratings. It did seem more like a PG movie, though. Something I can understand is that what kid under thirteen would be going to the movies without their parents in the first place? Since a child can get into PG-13 with a parent, then I don't see a problem, except that a parent might have doubts about the movie. Any parents having doubts, I can assure them I would find the movie perfectly suitable for a child of any age. The only thing that came close to vulgarity was the kiss by the two people. I hope that a lot of little girls (and boys, too) go to see the movie! I liked it and the music, too. I just got the soundtrack today. People try to say preformers like Britney Spears and The Spice Girls are asserting "Girl Power" because they show off their bodies, but I see any REAL girl band just like the fictional Josie and the Pussycats has real girl power, being able to write, learn to play, and preform their own music. Who knows? It might inspire some girls watching the movie to start their own band. Maggie ***************************************
Hi, my name is Victoria B. Even though I am only fifteen, I wanted to write to you guys, and voice my opinion. My friend and I saw Josie and the Pussycats, when it first opened yesterday (April 11th), we thought the movie was very good, and had no idea why it should be rated PG13. There was no cussing, no sex, no drugs, no violence, no bad anything basically. I think, the PG13 rating, is striking for the parents of smaller children to see, but I know that if a movie is rated PG, I would consider it a little kid movie, and would be discouraged from viewing it, but that is how most people are in their teenage years. When I first saw the previews for Josie and the Pussycats the movie, I really wanted to see it, because I've seen the cartoon many times, and was very curious to what the movie would be about. In conclusion, Josie and the Pussycats was a very good movie, and I would pay to see it again. Thank-you,
